While AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka was in Milwaukee Labor Day with President Obama and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Liz Shuler traveled throughout California, taking part in three Labor Day celebrations. In Los Angeles, she told an enthusiastic crowd at the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor ’s Labor Day breakfast: There’s nothing wrong with good jobs in America. There’s nothing wrong with trade that creates jobs—instead of killing them. Click the headline to read more>>

In a Labor Day address to more than 10,000 union members and their families in Milwaukee, President Obama announced a massive new job-creating road, rail, runway and air traffic control rebuilding project. Speaking to the Milwaukee Area Labor Council’s annual LaborFest celebration, Obama said it was “the great American middle class that made our economy the envy of the world. It’s got to be that way again.” Click the headline to read more>>

The U.S. jobless rate worsened to 9.6 percent in August from 9.5 percent in July, with 54,000 jobs lost, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data out today. The private sector created only 67,000 jobs in August, far below the 150,000 jobs a month needed to keep up with the population and extremely far below the hundreds of thousands of new jobs needed each month to return to pre-recession employment levels. Government employment fell by 121,000, largely reflecting the loss of 114,000 temporary workers hired for U.S. Census 2010. Click the headline to read more>>

On June 4th the Capital District Labor movement and friends joined IUE-CWA 81359 in rallying for a fair contract. Over 200 supporters were on hand in the hot sun to give the contract negotiating team a proper send off to Rochester. Their contract ends June 20th and the company needs to settle a fair and just contract inculding the backpay for all of the workers whose wages were stolen illegally over a year ago. For a wonderful article on the event inculding pictures and video click on the Troy Record's Dannielle Sanzone. Jon Flanders also wrote a great article for Labor Notes here.

Our country is experiencing the greatest recession in decades. We all know the economy is not working for working people. We are in the middle of a "Billionaire Bailout" society. This forum provides an opportunity for the Labor Movement along with their community partners learn from each other about the "real" economy. An interactive format will foster discussion and will culminate with actionable items that everyone can participate in to start making the economy work for us. Click here to register for event.

There was a fantastic turnout for the Stony Brook Research assistants who have been waiting for their first contract for almost a year. After some picketing around the GIANT inflatable corporate pig, everyone was able to listen to some of the RA's that are on the bargaining committee. Video thanks to Jim McCasey

Politicians lining up behind unions

The Business Review - by Mike Hendricks

The photograph taken by Business Review reporter Adam Sichko is striking. The image is of three elected officials, the mayor of Albany, Jerry Jennings, a state senator, Neil Breslin, and a state Assemblyman, Bob Reilly, lined up and raising their hands and essentially taking an oath administered by a union leader.

The scene was at a labor rally last week where unions protested the firing of three workers they claim were fired for trying to organize a union at the Holiday Inn Express in Latham.
