You may have heard that Wisconsin lawmakers snuck in a “Right to Work” bill this week. This dead of night manuever greatly cut down on our ability to mobilize and speak out against this attack on working families. This bill passed the Senate, and Governor Walker has announced his intention to sign the bill.  It still must pass the assembly, and thousands of union members have come together to voice their opposition.

An attack on one of us is an attack on all. We need to unite now more than ever against this threat. If “Right to Work” passes successfully in Wisconsin, it’s only a matter of time before its proponents turn their eyes to New York. 2015 Labor Issues Forum a Huge Success!

This past Wednesday, over 150 union members and dozens of local and statewide politicians gathered at the Albany Labor Temple to hear labor leaders present the issues facing union members across the Capital District.

In the spirit of Solidarity, a fundraiser was held to benefit our Brothers and Sisters in CWA and IBEW who are currently striking at FairPoint Communications. They are striking for a fair contract and are remaining strong over 100 days into the strike.

The raffle raised over 500 dollars and we are so proud of Brothers David Scalisi of OPEIU 277 and Kaseem Moultrie of SEIU 200United who generously donated their prizes to the strike fund.  We will be sending $725 to the strikers!

Brother Jon Flanders took some amazing pictures of the event which can be found here.

16th Annual MLK Labor Celebration a Huge Success!

This past Monday, the Martin Luther King Labor Celebration Committee of the CDALF held an event honoring Dr. King’s legacy at Hackett Middle School.  The keynote speaker was Colia Clark, a lifelong civil rights activist who marched alongside Dr. King.

Coila was preceded by a panel discussion featuring Alice Brody (NYSUT retiree), Kasseem Moultrie (SEIU Local 200United)  and Ben Gordon (CSEA).

Amazing entertainment was provided by Taina Asili, whose inspired songs of struggle and change brought the audience to their feet!

A special thank you to all who attended and our amzaing volunteers, without which this event could have never happened.

We look forward to seeing you next year!

Special thanks to Brother Jon Flanders who took these great photos of the event.  More can be found here.

There’s a strike at FairPoint!  IBEW and CWA members have been striking for a fair contract. The strike has stretched into its 14th week and the strike fund is running low.  Our brave Brothers and Sisters across Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont need our help.  From Jim Snow, the AFL- CIO Regional Director for the North East:

“This strike is a pivotal one for the labor movement in northern New England.  In addition to the wellbeing of 2000 union families, our ability to defend others, and to pursue a strategy of Raising Wages in New England, is very much at stake.

Striking workers face special hardships in the winter.  We hope that the current mediation sessions will produce an agreement, but after 14 weeks there is tremendous stress on our brothers and sisters in any case.  Please see the address and link below to make a contribution.

Thank you so much for any contribution you can make to help support the strikers!

This Black Friday, the Capital District Area Labor Federation and allies stood over 50 strong to protest the low wages and poor working conditions faced by the rank and file employees of Wal Mart. We stood up for a 15 dollar minimum wage, full time employment and a regular schedule, all of which are easy things to change for one of the most profitable countries on earth!

We generated activity all across the capital region and were covered by several media outlets. You can see News Channel 13’s coverage by clicking here.
